Three waterfalls and a cave in one day through Belize's oldest landscape

A full-day guided tour from San Ignacio into Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve covers three major sites: an hour-long hike to Rio Frio Cave, a swim and lunch stop at Rio On Pools, and Big Rock Falls, a 100-foot cascade with cliff-jumping pools. The reserve's rock formations date back 340 million years, shaped by tectonic upheaval and weathering into dramatic waterfalls and streams. A live guide leads the route in English or Spanish, with all transport, meals and entry fees included.

The experience

The day starts with a 90-minute drive from San Ignacio into the heart of Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, one of Central America's oldest landscapes. The reserve's geology is its foundation: tectonic plates pushed molten rock upward from the sea millions of years ago, and wind and rain have since carved it into a network of waterfalls, streams and rivers that feed two of Belize's major watersheds. The rocks themselves date back 340 million years, the oldest exposed stone in Central America.

After arrival, an hour-long hike through broadleaf jungle leads to Rio Frio Cave, where the guide points out native plants and their traditional uses along the way. The cave's entrance is a soaring limestone arch roughly 65 feet high, the widest cave mouth in Belize, and unlike many of the country's other caves, it requires no technical gear or water wading. The entire interior is walkable on foot. The cave holds significance in Maya history and stands as one of Belize's most visited natural landmarks. A 20-minute drive brings you next to Rio On Pools, where a traditional Belizean lunch is served overlooking exposed granite ledges where the river cascades into a series of mini-waterfalls and clear swimming holes. Free time follows to swim or explore the lookout points. The day ends at Big Rock Falls, a 100-foot waterfall fed by the Privassion River that plunges into a deep emerald pool. The site offers two swimming pools and rocks suitable for cliff jumping for those who want it.

Transport is air-conditioned throughout, and the guide speaks English or Spanish. Lunch, snacks and all entry fees are included. Bring a reusable water bottle for refills along the route.

Is this one for you?Eight hours away from San Ignacio leaves room for an early breakfast before pickup or a late dinner after return, but rules out combining this with another full-day excursion. The moderate jungle hike suits most fitness levels, though the day's length and multiple stops make it less suitable for travelers with cardiovascular concerns.
