The experience

Pickup happens at your hotel or the San Ignacio area (the drive takes about three and a half hours to reach Gate 2 of Tikal National Park). The walking tour itself runs more than four hours, moving between archaeological complexes on nature trails where you may spot wildlife. The guide is bilingual and carries deep knowledge of local history, flora and fauna. Each monument gets explained in context rather than as a list of facts.

The route takes you through the royal residential complex first, a place with six courtyards that once hosted diplomatic visitors from other Mesoamerican cities. Three courtyards have been restored. The palace itself has five floors and still holds original wooden lintels carved and placed roughly fourteen centuries ago. From there you move to the Temple of the Great Jaguar, circling it to photograph from different angles: the guide shows you the spots that work best. The Great Plaza comes next, the most restored complex at the site, filled with stelae carved with portraits of kings. The North Acropolis served as a royal cemetery and reveals layers of architecture like an onion. You climb it for views of the Great Plaza and the masks carved on top. Temple V, the second tallest structure at Tikal, stands apart architecturally and was the first temple discovered here in 1848 because its roof comb stayed visible above the trees.

The Lost World functions as an astronomical observatory, with the Great Pyramid positioned to track stars, planets and the sun, and three buildings on the east side marking the seasons. The Complex of the Seven Temples holds a triple ball court (the only one found so far in Mesoamerica) alongside three palaces and seven temples arranged in a line. The Temple of the Double Headed Serpent (nicknamed the Temple of Star Wars after George Lucas filmed there in 1977) rounds out the major stops. By 2 p.m. the walking tour ends at Gate 2, and you head to Jaguar Inn Restaurant for lunch with water refills included. Chicken, gluten-free and vegan options are available. After eating you can visit the scale model at the visitor center or walk the grounds to spot more wildlife before the drive back to your starting point.
