The experience
The day starts at 7:30 AM in San Ignacio with a two-hour drive through the Maya villages of Cristo Rey and San Antonio to reach Caracol, perched at 500 meters on the Vaca Plateau. Once there, you walk forest trails that nobles and peasants once threaded, with your guide sharing local knowledge passed down through generations. Caracol was first settled in 600 B.C., rose to a metropolis by 675 A.D., and at its peak supported over 100,000 inhabitants: a network of roads, agriculture and monumental architecture that eventually rivaled Tikal itself.
The centerpiece is climbing the Canna, the 43-meter pyramid that dominates the site. From the top, the tropical forest spreads in every direction, the same view that shaped the Maya civilization here. After lunch, the tour stops at Rio On Pools (or Big Rock Falls) in the Mountain Pine Ridge, where you can swim and cool off in the 100-foot cascade before the drive back to San Ignacio.
