The experience
The Macal River starts where two rivers merge, and the paddle begins at that confluence. You'll move with the gentle current rather than against it, which means four hours of steady progress downriver without the strain of fighting the flow. Your guide is a local who knows where the wildlife congregates and what to listen for: the howler monkeys announce themselves before you see them in the canopy, and the toucans and parrots are easier to spot once someone points out which trees they favor. Iguanas sun themselves on rocks and branches along the banks, and the river's twists and bends mean something new appears around each turn.
Hotel pickup happens within San Ignacio Town, and the entrance fee to paddle this section is already paid. You bring a reusable water bottle (the guide recommends it), wear a swimsuit under a long-sleeved shirt for sun protection, and pack a hat. The operator provides chips with salsa as a snack during the paddle. A minimum of two passengers is required for the tour to run. If cancellation happens after you've booked, you'll get an alternative date or a full refund.

Is this one for you?You paddle the canoe yourself with the guide steering and narrating from the back, so this suits anyone who wants to be active on the water rather than watching from a passenger seat. The four-hour paddle with the current is steady enough for all fitness levels, making it work for families and mixed-ability groups paddling together.

Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (11 to 14 years); Child (under 11).
What wildlife will I actually see on the Macal River?
Howler monkeys, toucans, iguanas, and parrots are the animals the guide watches for and points out along the river. The monkeys are loud enough to hear before you spot them, and the birds are most active in the trees overhanging the water.
How does the current work on this paddle?
The Macal River flows downriver from the confluence where the Mopan and Macal meet, so you paddle with the current rather than against it. This keeps the four-hour paddle steady and manageable without fighting the water.
What's included in the price?

The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels. Since you're paddling with the current and the guide is there to navigate, paddling experience isn't required. Just the ability to sit in a canoe for four hours.
