The experience
Four hours starts with pickup at your San Ignacio hotel and a ride to base camp, where you get outfitted with a kayak, paddle, life vest and helmet. A guide walks you through safety essentials and paddling basics before you launch onto the Mopan River, the waterway the ancient Maya named and that still carries that name today. The river winds through the lush western interior of Belize, and as you paddle, you'll float past traditional communities lining the banks and through unspoiled jungle landscape.
The paddling itself mixes calm stretches with class I rapids: relatively mild white water suitable for beginners and intermediate kayakers. During the slower sections, you have time to soak in the surroundings and watch for native wildlife: black howler monkeys, exotic birds, and iguanas move through the trees and along the water. The guide stays close to offer assistance and keep you safe. If you capsize, they'll help you back into the kayak and get you paddling smoothly again. After you've tackled the rapids and worked your way downriver, you dry off on the ride back to your hotel, arriving in the early afternoon.
