The experience
The adventure starts with a scenic 25-minute drive from your meeting location, crossing rivers until the jungle opens onto the Blue Hole cave entrance. After a safety briefing and gear check (kayak, helmet, life vest, headlamp), you push off into gently moving water that disappears into the underworld. Stalagmites rise from the river floor. Stalactites hang overhead. Your headlamp is the only light, and each paddle stroke reveals a new formation the guides bring to life as you move deeper.
The route passes underground seasonal waterfalls and leads to the Crystal Cathedral, a massive dry chamber where the ancient Maya left artifacts and ash from spiritual ceremonies thousands of years ago. The formations here are enormous: columns and draperies of stone that dwarf the kayak. Your guide walks you through the chamber on foot, explaining what you're standing in front of and how the Maya used this space, before you paddle back out the way you came.
The full outing runs six hours from start to finish. Lunch is included partway through, and a certified guide fluent in English or Spanish stays with your group the entire time. Kayaks, helmets, life vests and headlamps are provided. You bring a willingness to paddle in darkness and a comfort with water moving beneath you.

Is this one for you?The six-hour commitment and cave environment suit travelers who want immersion over a quick stop (you're paddling, not watching from a boat), and who are comfortable in darkness and on water. Children from age six can join, though the physical demands and confined space mean it works best for families whose kids are already at ease in kayaks.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Spanish.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (6 to 17 years). Children under 6 can't be included in the booking.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What is the Crystal Cathedral and why do guides spend time there?
The Crystal Cathedral is a dry chamber deep inside the cave system where the ancient Maya conducted spiritual ceremonies. It holds artifacts and ash from those rituals, and the rock formations there are massive enough that guides stop to walk you through on foot and explain the history before you paddle back out.
How much of the kayaking happens in complete darkness?
You paddle the entire route through the cave with only your headlamp to light the water and the formations around you. The darkness is part of what makes each turn reveal a new natural wonder, and your guide stays close to keep you safe and oriented.
What happens if I'm not an experienced kayaker?
The water moves gently and the route is designed for paddlers of all fitness levels. The guide's job includes keeping you safe and oriented, and the kayak itself is stable enough that experience matters less than comfort being on the water.
