The day starts with pickup at your hotel within 20 kilometers of San Ignacio town. The drive takes you south into the Cayo District to Caracol, which sits 500 meters above sea level on the Vaca Plateau. Once there, you hike through the ruins: climbing pyramids, watching for wildlife like monkeys and birds, and moving through what archaeologists now recognize as one of the most important political centers of the Maya Lowlands during the Classic Period. The site itself is the main event, and the hiking is built into exploring it rather than a separate trek.

On the way back, the tour stops at Rio On Pools for a swim in the natural cascading pools of Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve. This is a chance to cool off and spend time in the forest without heavy exertion. After that comes Rio Frio Cave, where minimal hiking gets you to the cave entrance for sightseeing. The whole sequence (ruins, water, cave) fills the nine hours, and lunch is included partway through.
