The experience

From there, a short swim, about 15 feet, gets you past the threshold into what the Maya called Xibalba, the underworld. Your guide carries a headlamp and leads you through underground tunnels and passageways decorated with stalactites and stalagmites, pointing out the ancient clay pottery and altars still in place.

The main plaza holds the burial chambers where you'll see calcified remains and the altars where Maya leaders made blood offerings during sacrificial ceremonies. Your guide explains what took place in this sacred space thousands of years ago, walking you through the ritual history written into the stone and artifacts around you. The route involves climbing, swimming and navigating tight passages, so a moderate level of fitness matters: the cave demands your full attention and your body's cooperation.
