You emerge from caves into sunlight, then plunge back into darkness as the Sibun River carries you deeper underground.

This 6-hour activity at Nohoch Chen Archaeological Park combines ziplining and cave tubing in Belize City. You glide 100 to 750 feet between jungle platforms at canopy level on seven zipline runs, then float through an underground cave system with crystalline formations and stalagmites appearing in your headlight beam. Belizean BBQ lunch and all equipment are included.

The experience

Nohoch Chen Archaeological Park, 37 miles up the Western Highway, is your base for the day. You start with ziplining: after being fitted into a safety harness with pulleys on horizontal cables, you spend 30 to 40 minutes gliding between 10 jungle platforms positioned up to 120 feet high in the trees. The runs stretch from 100 to 750 feet, so each one feels different as you move through the canopy.

After lunch (Belizean rice and beans, stewed chicken, fried plantains and coleslaw), your guides brief you on cave tubing safety, then issue you a tube, headlight and gear. You hike into the rainforest to the cave entrance and begin floating through Xibalba, the ancient Maya underworld. Intricate crystalline formations line the passages, and stalagmites and stalactites emerge from the darkness as your headlight sweeps across them. Several times you float out into sunlight before the cave swallows you again.

The activity runs 6 hours total. Your driver and guide speak English or Spanish, and an air-conditioned vehicle brings you from your hotel and back. All ziplining and cave tubing equipment is provided, along with water at the venue. Children from age 2 can join, though cave tubing requires a minimum height of 4 feet.
