The Experience

We started out bumping along the road from Belize City, windows down because the air-con was fighting a losing battle against the heat. Our guide, Carla, waved at every other person we passed — I guess everyone knows everyone here. When we reached the stables near Belmopan, I’ll admit I was nervous. Horses are bigger up close than you remember from childhood cartoons. But they matched me with this gentle old guy named Chico who seemed more interested in munching grass than running off anywhere.

The first few minutes were just fields and sun on my arms, but then we dipped under the trees and it felt like someone turned down the volume on the world. The jungle smells different — damp earth, something sweet I couldn’t name. Carla pointed out some bird (I forgot the name instantly) that made this weird metallic call overhead. We crossed a shallow river where Chico hesitated and then just plodded through like he’d done it a thousand times. Honestly, I didn’t expect to feel so relaxed riding through all that green.

Afterwards, we stopped for lunch at this small spot that looked like someone’s house — plastic chairs, fans spinning lazily overhead. The rice and beans tasted smoky and there was this hot sauce that nearly took my head off (Carla laughed when I coughed). Then came the cave tubing part — floating in cool darkness while water echoed off stone walls. It was quiet except for our voices bouncing around; kind of eerie but peaceful too. On the drive back to Belize City, Carla gave us a mini tour — pointing out old colonial buildings and telling stories about growing up here. I still think about that river crossing sometimes when things get noisy back home.
