The experience

What makes this different from either activity alone is the pairing: you get the adrenaline of ziplining through the jungle canopy on six runs that stretch roughly a mile, then the meditative float through caves the Maya once used. The day starts with a drive to the National Park, about an hour from Belize City, and your guide gives a city tour on the way. You'll order lunch during the drive. The special is rice and beans made with coconut milk, coleslaw, and grilled chicken with a drink. Once at the park, you change into a bathing suit (you will get wet), gear up with a harness, helmet and gloves for the zipline section, then take a 30-minute walk to the river.

The cave tubing itself is the part that stays with you. Instead of paddling, you recline in an inner tube with a netted bottom and a headrest, clipped to a guide line, and drift through the cave system with a headlamp. Your hands stay free. The setup means even if you're not a strong swimmer or you're tired from the zipline runs, you're secure and comfortable. The guide stays with you the whole way, pointing out formations and explaining the history. Restrooms and changing areas are at the park, and merchants sell water and souvenirs if you need them.

Hotel pickup and drop-off from Belize City or the airport are included, and the guide speaks English and Spanish. Bring old sneakers, crocs or water shoes, no flip-flops, and a change of clothes and towel. Kids need to be at least 40 inches tall to cave tube. The moderate difficulty level means you should be comfortable with physical activity, but you don't need to be an athlete. The equipment does most of the work.
