Step-by-step itinerary
Explore caves and float underground
- Walk 30 minutes into forest
- Explore two dry Fertility Caves
- Learn about flora and fauna
- Float through two epic caves
- Listen to Mayan history narration
The experience
The tour starts with a 30-minute walk deep into the forest, where the canopy opens onto the entrance to two dry caves known as the Fertility Caves of the Maya. Your guide walks you through these caves first, pointing out the formations and explaining what the Maya believed about the spaces you're standing in. Then you move to the main event: an inner tube float through two larger caves that flow with an underground river. The current does the work. You drift through passages carved by water over centuries, watching the rock formations pass overhead and listening to your guide narrate the history of the civilization that considered this place sacred.
The underground float is the centerpiece: an "epic cave" passage believed by the Maya to be the entrance to their underworld. How long you spend inside varies based on the river's height on the day you go, which means the caves themselves set the pace. You'll see formations and hear the guide's account of Mayan beliefs and history as you float, making the geology and the culture inseparable. An air-conditioned vehicle picks you up and brings you back, and the inner tube is provided.
