The Experience

First thing I noticed pulling up to Xunantunich was how the jungle just kind of hugs the ruins — like it’s still trying to keep its secrets. Our guide, Carlos, waved us over to the hand-cranked ferry (I’d never been on one before — it’s slower than you’d think, but that’s part of the charm). He told us stories about Maya rulers and rivalries as we crossed the Mopan River. There was this thick, earthy smell after last night’s rain, and birds darting everywhere. I tried to say “Xunantunich” right; Carlos grinned and said even locals debate it sometimes.

Climbing El Castillo felt taller than I expected — 130 feet doesn’t sound like much till you’re halfway up with your knees reminding you what you ate for breakfast. At the top, there was just wind and this sudden hush over everything below. You can see all the way into Guatemala on a clear day (we could), and someone pointed out a patch of mist curling over the trees. It’s weirdly peaceful up there, considering all the old stories about royal tombs and ancient feuds. I touched one of the carved friezes — probably not supposed to, but it was cool under my fingers.

Lunch was simple but good — rice, beans, chicken with some kick to it (and a soda that tasted extra cold after that climb). Afterward we drove toward St. Herman’s, windows down because honestly, air-con can’t beat Belize air when it’s not too humid. The Inland Blue Hole isn’t huge or flashy — it just appears out of nowhere in the forest. The water is shockingly blue and cold enough to make you yelp at first dip. Some local kids were laughing at us city folks flinching at the temperature. I floated for a bit watching sunlight flicker through leaves overhead; didn’t want to get out.
