The experience
You start from your hotel, airport or water taxi in either Belize City or San Ignacio and drive through farmland, villages and towns toward the countryside. The guide navigates the route and explains what you pass. Once you reach the river, you paddle a kayak through a series of caves, moving at the pace the water allows. The cave system is the centerpiece: limestone walls narrow around you as you move deeper into passages where the guide points out formations and the river's flow.
The day also includes Xunantunich, an ancient Maya temple site you hike to on a forest path. Lunch is a local meal of rice and beans with stew chicken and coleslaw, eaten during a break in the schedule. The guide speaks English or Spanish and stays with the group throughout. Helmets, life jackets and lights are provided. You bring nothing but a change of clothes and sunscreen.
Water level is the deciding factor. If the river crossing to Xunantunich floods or the cave system runs too high for safe paddling, the guide switches the day to tubing instead, or the group visits Cahal Pech (an earlier Maya settlement) with a zipline option. You get updates by text, email or WhatsApp the evening before at 6pm and again at 6am the morning of, so you know the plan before you leave your accommodation.
