The day starts with hotel pickup in Belize City and the drive to the ferry crossing at the Mopan River. Once across, your guide leads you into the ruins themselves — six large plazas laid out across the site, each one ringed with temples and structures to explore. You'll climb your way through 26 different temples, moving between them as your guide explains what you're standing in and answers questions. The physical work of climbing is real, but the payoff is immediate: each temple offers a different angle on the site and the landscape beyond it.
El Castillo, the second tallest man-made structure in the country, is the centerpiece. Reaching the top takes effort, but from there you can see across the Guatemalan border and take in the full sweep of the plazas below. Your guide walks you through the history and significance of what you're looking at — this was one of the three strongest, most dominant Mayan cities in Mesoamerica, thriving until around 750 A.D. and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The tour also includes a stop at the famous Belize sign for photos before heading back.
