The experience
The day starts with hotel or port pickup in an air-conditioned minivan, then you head to the ziplines. You'll rig into a harness and clip onto the cables, zipping over forest canopy and across rivers before regrouping with your guide. From there the minivan takes you to Altun Ha, where you walk among the ancient pyramids on your own pace while the guide explains the site's history.
After Altun Ha, you change into swim gear for the cave section. If water levels are low and conditions are stable, you'll paddle a kayak through the cave systems. If the current is too strong or the water too high, your guide will switch the group to tubes instead and navigate you through. Either way, you're moving through the caves with a headlamp, seeing rock formations and the river passage the guide knows. The operator notes that tubing in high water is actually safer than paddling in those conditions, so the switch is a safety call, not a downgrade.
Lunch is local (rice and beans with stew chicken and vegetable coleslaw) eaten before or after the caves depending on the day's flow. You'll need to bring bug spray, a towel and a change of clothes. Wear closed-toed shoes (no flip-flops) and swimwear under your clothes. River shoe rental is available on-site if you didn't bring water shoes. Bring a waterproof camera if you want photos inside the caves.
