The experience

Altun Ha sits about an hour outside Belize City, and the tour handles the drive in an air-conditioned vehicle with bottled water on board. Your guide meets you at pickup and leads you through the ancient Mayan site, where you decide how much to climb: the Sun God Temple is the main draw, and reaching the top gives a view across the jungle, but you can also walk the plazas and examine the temples from ground level. Either way, your guide explains the history and the layout of the ruins while you're there.

On the route to or from Altun Ha, you stop at the Belize sign monument for photos, and you also visit a rum factory where you taste local rums, wines and brandy, plus a short walking tour of the museum to learn how rum was made in early Belize and how it's made now. The factory is closed on Sundays and certain public holidays, so on those days the rum stop becomes a full Belize City tour covering both the north and south sides of the city and its historic sites instead. At the ruins, you have time for souvenir shopping and can arrange a local lunch before heading back to your drop-off point.
