experience

What’s the experience like?

Ever wondered what it feels like to walk on a real fortress wall? I didn’t think much about Suwon before this day trip from Seoul—just figured it’d be another old site. But standing on Hwaseong Fortress, you get this weird mix of wind and history brushing past your ears. Our guide, Minji, pointed out the marks left by cannonballs (she said they’re real) and told us how this was Korea’s only remaining walled city. I remember the stone felt cool even though the sun was out, and there was this faint smell of pine needles drifting over from somewhere behind the ramparts.

We stopped at Hwaseong Haenggung Palace next—Minji timed it so we caught the royal guard ceremony. The drumming echoed off those painted eaves, and honestly, I got goosebumps when the martial arts guys started flipping those wooden swords around. There were kids in hanbok giggling nearby; one of them tried to teach me how to bow properly (I probably messed it up). Lunch wasn’t included but we grabbed some street snacks—spicy tteokbokki that almost made me tear up.

I didn’t expect to love the Starfield Library as much as I did. It’s inside a mall but somehow feels peaceful—books stacked floor-to-ceiling under this soft yellow light. You can just sit there for a while watching locals reading or taking selfies in front of the giant shelves. Then we finished at the Korean Folk Village, where everything smells like wood smoke and sweet rice cakes. There were artisans weaving baskets and an old man who let me try pounding rice for tteok (he laughed when I nearly dropped the mallet). It’s not a perfect reenactment but you do feel something real there—like time slows down for a bit.
