Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Visit Korean Folk Village and shopping

  • Travel by coach to folk village
  • Explore traditional houses and exhibits
  • Experience late Joseon lifestyle
  • Visit shopping center

I’ll be honest — I signed up for the Korean Folk Village afternoon tour mostly because I was curious what “real” old Korea felt like. You know how sometimes you see those tiled roofs on postcards? Well, seeing them up close is different. The coach picked us up right from our hotel in Seoul (which was a relief because I always get subway lines mixed up), and by the time we reached the village, I could already smell wood smoke drifting from somewhere. Our guide, Minji, had this way of pointing out little things — like how each house’s gate meant something about the family inside. I wouldn’t have noticed that on my own.

We wandered between these 260 or so traditional houses — some with creaky wooden floors, others with bright paper doors that looked almost too delicate to touch. There were these old kitchen tools laid out everywhere, and Minji laughed when I tried to guess what half of them did (I got one right — the rice paddle). The air felt different there, maybe because it was quieter than Seoul. Every so often you’d hear someone practicing a drum in the distance or smell something sweet from a food stall. It’s funny how you start to imagine what it would’ve been like to live here centuries ago — or maybe that’s just me getting lost in my head again.

I didn’t expect to feel so calm walking through all those courtyards. Even when we stopped at the little shopping center before heading back, I caught myself thinking about how much slower everything seemed compared to downtown Seoul. There’s this moment where you’re standing under a low tiled roof and sunlight hits all the dust in the air — it just sticks with you after. If you’re looking for a day trip from Seoul that isn’t just another palace or busy street, this one surprised me.
