The experience

The tour departs Seoul and takes you to Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, where the night lighting transforms the UNESCO-listed walls and gates into a different landscape than the daytime version. Your guide walks you through the fortress grounds, pointing out Janganmun Gate and Hwaseomun Gate as the route unfolds. The 5-hour tour includes admission and transport in an air-conditioned vehicle, so the logistics are settled before you arrive.

From June through September, the itinerary includes Hwaseong Haenggung Palace, where you see the night-lit palace grounds. Outside the summer season (March–May and October–December), the tour skips the palace and extends the fortress walk instead. Either way, the evening timing is what makes the illumination the main event: the fortress reads differently after dark than it does in daylight.

The tour ends in Haenglidan-gil, a neighborhood that has become known for Korean street food, independent cafes, and the "newtro" aesthetic (retro-modern design). This is where the Kimbap restaurant from Extraordinary Attorney Woo is located, and it's a place to try Korean food you might not have ordered otherwise. In summer, the walk here is brief, 10 to 15 minutes, with no formal dinner or snack time built in, so you're free to stop or keep moving. Drop-off happens in Myeongdong, Seoul.
