The Experience

The drive from Seoul takes about an hour, and you depart around midday with your guide. Once you arrive, you're walking through a working open-air museum of Korean culture — the 270 houses here were actually relocated and reconstructed from different regions of Korea, so what you're seeing is authentic Joseon-dynasty architecture, not a replica. The village has stood since 1974 and operates as both a tourist destination and a filming location for Korean television, which means the streets and buildings have real historical weight behind them.

Throughout the afternoon, you'll encounter live performances: farmer's music and dancing, acrobatic tightrope walking (weather permitting), and the chance to try on masks and participate in "Tal-chum," a traditional masked performance. You can also watch traditional craftspeople at work — potters, blacksmiths and artisans making traditional clothes — and the village includes attractions for both kids and adults, including displays of Korean cultural artifacts. Your guide explains what you're seeing and helps you understand how people actually lived during the Joseon period.
