The experience

You arrive at Jeju Cruise Terminal and get picked up directly: no waiting for a shuttle or negotiating ground transport. The tour is private, so the itinerary moves at your pace without the stops at souvenir shops that fill shared group tours. A live guide in English, Japanese or Chinese narrates the sites as you travel in a vehicle sized to your group: a regular taxi for two or three, a minivan for a small family, or a minibus if you're a larger party.

The day centers on Seongsan Ilchulbong, a tuff cone that erupted from the ocean floor 5,000 years ago and now rises from the coast as one of Jeju's most recognizable landmarks. At 2 PM every day, haenyeo (the female divers who have worked Jeju's waters for generations) perform at Seongsanpo Port, diving without oxygen tanks to harvest seafood the way they have for centuries. Before or after the performance, you walk the trails around the cone itself, which offers views of the volcanic crater and the ocean, or simply stand at the summit and take in the scale of it. Jeju Stone Culture Park, built across 300,000 pyeong of Gotjawal land, tells the creation myth of Seolmundae Halmang, the goddess said to have formed the island, through stone relics and folk artifacts. The Seong-eup village, which served as Jeju's administrative center for 500 years, preserves the layout and history of that era.

Manjanggul Lava Tube, one of the world's largest, lets you walk 1 km into a tunnel formed thousands of years ago. The lava column at the end of the tourist section stands 7.6 meters high: the tallest known lava column anywhere. Gwangchigi Beach, visible from Seongsan Ilchulbong in the distance, offers cafes and a quieter moment if the itinerary includes it. Fuel and parking fees are built into the price. Entry fees to individual sites are separate. The tour wraps by early evening with dropoff back at the cruise terminal.

Top questions

What languages is the guide in?

Live guide in English, Japanese and Chinese.

What exactly are the haenyeo, and do I get to see them dive?

Haenyeo are female divers of Jeju who harvest seafood by free diving without oxygen equipment, a practice that has defined Jeju culture for generations. The tour includes a performance at Seongsanpo Port at 2 PM every day, where you watch them work in the water near Seongsan Ilchulbong.

Is Seongsan Ilchulbong a hike, or can I see it from the ground?

Seongsan Ilchulbong offers walking trails to the summit, which gives views of the volcanic crater and the surrounding ocean, but you can also view the cone and the area from ground level. The tour includes time at the site. How much you walk is up to you.

What's inside Manjanggul Lava Tube, and how far do tourists go?

Manjanggul is a massive lava tube 7.4 km long with formations like stalactites, stalagmites, and lava shelves. Tourists can walk 1 km into the second entrance. The lava column at the end of that section is 7.6 meters tall, the highest known in the world.

Do I need to pay extra for entry to the sites, or is everything included?

Entry fees to Seongsan Ilchulbong, Jeju Stone Culture Park, and other attractions are not included in the tour price and are paid separately. Fuel, parking, pickup, and the guide are included.

Can I do this tour if I'm not very fit, or if I'm traveling with elderly family?

The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels. It is designed for families, friends, colleagues, and elderly or infant travelers. You control how much walking you do at each site.
