The experience
The tour starts at the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque during its morning opening hours (8:00 AM to 11:00 AM, Saturday through Thursday), when you can see the 12-meter chandelier and learn about Omani religious practice without the afternoon crowds. From there you move to Muttrah, where the fish market sits on the waterfront: a working market where vendors sell fresh catch, tropical fruits and vegetables, and you can walk through and negotiate prices if you want to buy. A few steps away, the Muttrah Souq opens up into a maze of stalls selling Omani handicrafts, textiles, and the country's famous fragrances. The guide navigates you through the narrow passages and explains what you're seeing.
The route then follows the Corniche along the coast to Old Muscat, where you stop for photographs of the Sultan's Palace framed by the Portuguese forts of Jalali and Mirani on either side. Bait Al Zubair Museum, a heritage center housed in a carved wooden building, holds one of the country's largest private collections of Omani artifacts and gives you direct access to the family's objects: textiles, weapons, manuscripts, and domestic pieces that tell the story of Oman's culture and history. The whole route takes four hours. Your guide speaks English or Arabic, and the vehicle comes with water and soft drinks in a cool box.
