The experience

The Grand Mosque anchors the morning. Built from 300,000 tonnes of Indian sandstone, its main prayer hall is a 74-by-74-metre square topped by a dome that rises fifty metres above the floor: a scale that hits differently when you stand inside it. The mosque opens to visitors between 8 and 11am daily (closed Fridays and holidays), so timing matters if you want to see it. Your guide walks you through the architecture and the space itself.

From there, the Muttrah Souq takes over the afternoon. One of Oman's oldest markets, it has been running for roughly two hundred years, and the narrow alleys still fill with the smell of spices, the glint of silver jewelry, and stalls selling frankincense, textiles and handicrafts. It is the kind of place where you can wander and find something you did not know you wanted. After the souq, you pass the Corniche and move into the capital area for a photo stop at the Sultan's Palace, flanked by the sixteenth-century Al Mirani and Al Jalali forts: a view that frames the city's layered history in one frame.

The tour wraps at Bait Al Zubair Museum, which holds a fine display of Omani culture and history. Your personal guide is with you the whole time; the vehicle is air-conditioned; and the hotel pickup and drop-off are built in. A maximum of four people travel per booking, so the group stays small.
