The Experience

We slid out of the hotel lobby just as the city was waking up, and our guide, Salim, was already waiting by the van—big smile, bottle of cold water ready. First stop: Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. I fumbled with my scarf (the dress code is strict for women—headscarf on, sleeves down) and Salim quietly helped me fix it right before we stepped onto the marble. Inside, it was silent except for the soft shuffle of socks on stone. The Persian carpet underfoot felt almost springy and I caught a whiff of incense clinging to someone’s sleeve. That chandelier? It actually made me squint.

After that we drove past palm trees and little fruit stalls to the Royal Opera House. I didn’t expect to care much about opera houses but the white stone outside almost glowed in the sun—Salim said it’s one of Muscat’s proudest spots for music. Then came Muttrah Souq, which hit all my senses at once: turmeric in the air, voices bouncing off old wooden beams, a man waving a handful of frankincense at me (I bought some—I still don’t know what to do with it). My bargaining skills are questionable but nobody seemed to mind too much.

The Al Alam Palace looked like something from a storybook—blue and gold against the sky—with guards standing so still I wondered if they ever blinked. We couldn’t go inside but walked around for photos while Salim told us stories about sultans and old forts nearby. Last stop was Bait Al Zubair museum in Old Muscat; swords on display, costumes behind glass, and outside there was this tiny model village that made me weirdly nostalgic for places I’ve never lived. The whole day felt like moving between centuries every half hour or so—you know?
