The experience
The tour starts at the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, where you photograph the exterior and watch the building lit at night: the mosque itself closes to visitors at 11 am, so this is an evening viewing. From there the route moves to the Royal Opera House, visible from outside only since it closes in the evening, then down to Qurum Beach to walk the shoreline and watch the sea. The second half centers on Mutrah Souq, the old traditional market where you wander the narrow passages, spot the landmarks of the historic buildings and discover Mutrah Fort nearby, with time to linger and take photographs.
Al Alam Palace comes next, the beautiful historical site lit up at night for photos, followed by Al Mirani and Al Jalali Fort, the historical landmarks that close the evening. An English-speaking guide leads the whole route and rides with you in an air-conditioned vehicle. Bottled water, tea and coffee are provided. The tour runs 4.5 hours total, which means you move between sites without long waits, though the pace depends on how much time you spend at each stop.
