The experience

Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque anchors the morning: you'll spend an hour or more there with your guide, who explains the architecture and history. From there the tour moves through the Royal Opera House, then into Muttrah: the old quarter where the souq sprawls across narrow lanes selling Omani frankincense, textiles and handicrafts. The corniche runs alongside, opening to views of the harbor and the traditional fish market below.

Al Mirani Fort and its twin Qal'at Al Jalali sit on the waterfront, their stone walls framing the Sea of Oman. You'll stop to take in the view and the landscape around the palace. Al Alam Palace itself comes next: the official residence, visible from the corniche. The Omani National Museum follows, where you walk through galleries of ancient Omani history and artifacts. The day ends at Qurum Beach, a long sandy stretch where locals and visitors walk and sit in the cafes facing the water.

The guide speaks English and stays with you throughout. Water and a drink are provided. There's no clock-watching.
