The experience
The tour begins at the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, where you'll see the 21-ton handmade Iranian carpet that can hold up to 20,000 worshippers. The mosque requires modest dress: long sleeves and long pants for everyone, and a headscarf for women. From there, the guide drives you past the ministries and the Royal Opera House, Oman's leading arts and culture venue, then continues to Muttrah Souq, one of the oldest marketplaces in the country, where you can browse for souvenirs and local goods.
The route also takes you to Bait Al Zubair museum to see Omani heritage and ancient artifacts, then past the Sultan's Palace for exterior photos. The final stops are the Al Mirani and Al Jalali forts, two Portuguese-era castles that overlook the harbor. You'll photograph them from outside since entry is not permitted. Along the way, you'll stop at Qurum Beach to sample Omani bread with honey and karak tea. The vehicle is air-conditioned, and bottled water, coffee and tea are provided throughout.
Pickup from your hotel is included, and the guide speaks English. The tour runs 4.5 hours total. Entry fees to the Zubair Museum and Royal Opera House are separate and not included in the tour price.
