The experience

You have a free evening in Muscat and want to see the city's main sights without arranging your own transport. A private guide picks you up from your hotel and drives you through the city at night, when the monuments are lit and the streets are quieter than during the day. The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque opens for visitors only until 11am, so the tour visits it early in the evening to see the building's exterior lighting and walk the gardens (photography is from outside only). From there you pass the Royal Opera House, stop for photos, and move into the older quarters.

Muttrah is the heart of the evening: you walk the traditional souk, browse the shops and stalls along the corniche, and get a sense of how the city's waterfront works at night. The Al-Alam Palace sits nearby, the official residence of the Sultan, and you spend time photographing the building and its surroundings. The tour then takes you to Al-Mirani and Al-Jalali castles, two forts that overlook the harbor and the beach, and finishes at Qurum Beach, where you watch the water and the lights reflected on it. Throughout, your guide handles the route and timing. You stop for coffee and tea when the group is ready.

The tour is private, so the pace and the length of stops are yours to set within the four to five hour window. Your guide speaks English, the vehicle has WiFi, and bottled water is on hand.
