The experience
The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque opens the day. A structure that holds 20,000 people and features the world's second-largest chandelier hanging above a single-piece carpet that spans the main hall. Photography is welcome, and the guide will point out the harmonious blend of Islamic design woven through the building. From there you move to the Royal Opera House, built in 2011, where you can photograph inside and see the materials and acoustics that make it a regional landmark. A 15-minute coffee break at Al Qurm Beach follows, a chance to step out and reset before the souq.
Muttrah Souq is where the day slows down. The market fills narrow alleys with clothing, frankincense, silver and gold. Each vendor's stall tells a story, and the guide navigates you through the layers. Viewpoints overlook the Sultan's yacht and the water beyond, framing the kind of shots that stay in memory. After the souq, Bait Al Zubair Museum lets you step into a restored traditional Omani house and browse the collections and gift shop. The tour ends in Old Muscat at Al Alam Palace, built in 1971, and the historic Portuguese forts by the waterfront: both photo stops that frame the city's layered past.
Authentic Omani food at Bait Al Luban Restaurant is optional. The guide can arrange it if you want to try Shewa, a smoked meat dish with local spices. The private sedan seats three to four guests comfortably, or you can request a 4WD. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, as is bottled water and parking. The guide speaks English and knows the city's details: what makes the stops matter and why the viewpoints work.
