The experience
The Grand Mosque anchors the morning. Built on a 416,000-square-meter site and inaugurated in 2001, it holds a prayer hall 74.4 meters square with a central dome rising 50 meters overhead. The interior prayer carpet, the centerpiece, weighs 21 tons, took four years to weave, and brings together Persian design traditions in 28 different color shades across 1.7 billion knots. The main minaret stands 90 meters high, and the prayer room can hold over 6,500 worshippers.
From there the route moves through the ministries and embassy district along Al Qurum Beach before reaching the Fish and Vegetable Market, where you watch locals buying and selling fresh fish and seafood. A short drive leads to Mutrah Souq, Oman's largest traditional marketplace. Dating back two hundred years, it sits adjacent to the harbor on a route that once connected to India and China. The name comes from the crowded stalls and narrow lanes so dense that sunlight doesn't reach the ground: shoppers once needed lamps to navigate. Today the alleys sell antiques, traditional fabrics, aromatic spices, frankincense, perfume, silver and Omani sweets. Mutrah Fort overlooks the souq from a mountain ridge. Originally built in 1507 and later reinforced by the Portuguese and the Al Busaidi dynasty, it was restored by the ministry of heritage and culture in 1980.
The afternoon turns to museums and palaces. Bait Al Zubair Museum displays Omani culture, history and information about the Royal Family. Al Alam Palace, built over 200 years ago and rebuilt as a royal residence in 1972, sits in Old Muscat with a facade of gold and blue. You can photograph it from the gates, though the inner grounds stay closed. Just behind it, Jalali and Mirani Forts sit in the harbor (built by the Portuguese in 1580 to protect against Ottoman attacks), but they are closed to visitors and you stop only for pictures. The day ends at the Royal Opera House, opened in October 2011 and designed to reflect contemporary Omani architecture. The complex holds a concert theater seating 1,100, formal gardens, restaurants and an art center for musical and theatrical productions.
