The experience
The tour starts with pickup from your hotel, airport or port in the Muscat area and moves through the city's landmarks in sequence. You'll stop at Mohammed Al Ameen Mosque, a marble structure completed in 2014 with chandeliers finished in 24-karat gold and Swarovski crystals, then at Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, whose main minaret rises 91.5 meters and whose grounds can hold up to 20,000 worshippers. The Royal Opera House on Sultan Qaboos Street is next, a photo stop at Oman's premier venue for musical arts.
From there the route heads to Muttrah, one of the oldest souks on the Arab peninsula. The rebuilt market draws locals more than tourists, so shopkeepers are welcoming without the hard sell you'd find in busier destinations. The Corniche runs alongside it: a stretch of latticed buildings, mosques and fountains that looks dramatic at sunset when light casts shadows across the serrated mountains. You'll have time to walk through both.
The final stops are Al Alam Palace, the ceremonial residence built in 1972 in the heart of Old Muscat, and the two harbor forts: Al Jalali, built by the Portuguese in the 1580s on an earlier Omani fortress, and Al Mirani, which existed before the Portuguese invasion and was the first fort in Oman to use cannons. Both are photo stops from the water's edge. The tour ends with drop-off back at your hotel.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (2 to 9 years).
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What is Al Alam Palace and why is it worth seeing on an evening tour?
Al Alam Palace is the ceremonial residence of the Sultan of Oman, built in 1972 as a fine example of modern Islamic architecture in the heart of Old Muscat. If the Omani flag is raised at the main entrance, the Sultan is in residence. It's a photo stop that anchors the tour's route through the old city's most significant buildings.
Is Muttrah Souq crowded with tourists, or is it still a working market?
Muttrah Souq is primarily a market for local people, not tourists. Rebuilt in the 1970s with a palm frond roof added recently for authenticity, it's one of the oldest souks on the Arab peninsula. Shopkeepers notice visitors but don't pressure them, so you can browse at your own pace.
What can I see from the harbor forts, and how close do we get?
Al Jalali and Al Mirani are both photo stops viewed from the water's edge in Old Muscat's harbor. Al Jalali was built by the Portuguese in the 1580s to protect the harbor after Ottoman attacks. Al Mirani existed before the Portuguese invasion and was the first Omani fort to use cannons. Both offer a view into Oman's military heritage.
How much time do I get to walk through Muttrah Souq and the Corniche?
The tour is four hours total and includes photo stops at five major landmarks before reaching Muttrah. You'll have time to wander the souq and stroll the Corniche, which stretches along latticed buildings and fountains and is especially striking at sunset.
Does the tour include water and transportation?
Yes. Water is included throughout the tour, and you travel in a comfortable 4WD or salon vehicle with pickup and drop-off at your hotel, airport or port in the Muscat area.
