The experience

The tour starts with pickup from your hotel, airport or cruise port in an air-conditioned vehicle. Your guide speaks English and travels with you through the morning, pointing out the landmarks and explaining what you're seeing. The first major stop is Muttrah Souq, one of the oldest markets in the Arab world. You walk through its narrow alleys on your own pace, passing vibrant stalls selling spices, textiles, jewelry and handicrafts made by local artisans. The market sits near the water, so the layout opens onto the Muttrah Corniche, a waterfront promenade with latticed buildings, mosques and views across the bay.

The Royal Opera House Muscat is a photo stop, so you see the building's exterior and learn about its blend of traditional Omani and contemporary design. Nearby is the fish market, which opens early (6 am to noon, Saturday to Thursday) and shows the working side of Muscat's maritime culture. Muttrah Fort sits on a rocky hill above the corniche with views of the coastline. It was built by the Portuguese in the 16th century and later served as a strategic defense point. The tour also includes time in Al 'Āmrāt, a district in the mountainous region outside the city center where you step away from the bustle and see traditional Omani culture in a quieter setting.

The whole experience runs four to five hours. You get water and soft drinks during the tour. The pace is set by the guide and the stops, so you're not arranging transport between sites or figuring out which direction to walk.
