The experience
The Grand Mosque opens to visitors between 8 and 11 am, and that's when you'll walk inside the main prayer hall: a 74-by-74-metre square space built from 300,000 tonnes of Indian sandstone with a central dome rising 50 metres overhead. The hand-woven carpet covering the floor was made by Iran Carpet Company and measures over 70 by 60 metres. Above it hangs a 14-metre chandelier manufactured by the Italian company Faustig. The entire complex sits on 416,000 square metres of land and can hold up to 20,000 worshippers across its prayer halls, courtyards and passageways. Dress code is formal or smart casual, with knees and shoulders covered for both men and women: no shorts or sleeveless tops.
After the mosque, you move to the Muttrah Souq in the afternoon (visiting between 9:30 am and 1 pm). This is a sprawling market under modern wooden roofs where the main artery runs north to south in less than five minutes, but the real maze extends west through dozens of branching alleys. You'll find gold and silver jewels, old khanjars, Bedu ornaments, incense and bukhoor trays, and frankincense and myrrh, often in the same shop. Bargaining is expected, though discounts tend to be small. Cards are accepted, but euros and dollars bring better offers. The heavily touristed main stretch near the corniche entrance is lively after dark, while the side alleys stay quieter and more rough-edged.
The tour also includes a photo stop at the Royal Opera House exterior at 10:30 am (the building opened in 2011 with a production of Turandot and holds 1,100 people), then moves to Al Alam Palace, the ceremonial residence of the Sultan, surrounded by the 16th-century forts of Al Jalali and Al Mirani. The palace itself is not open to the public, but you can walk the courtyard and photograph the exterior and the fortresses from the street. Port pickup and drop-off are included, along with bottled water and a professional guide who speaks Italian and English.

Is this one for you?Choose the Italian-language option if you're more comfortable speaking Italian with your guide. The tour also runs with an English-speaking guide. The half-day format fits a port call or a morning-to-afternoon window in Muscat, leaving your evening free, and the fixed schedule keeps the Grand Mosque visit inside the 8 to 11 am window when it's open to visitors.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Italian.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (12 to 22 years); Child (6 to 10 years); Infant (under 3): free.
How much time do you actually spend inside the Grand Mosque versus just looking at it from outside?
The Grand Mosque is a full visiting stop, not a photo stop. You enter during the 8 to 11 am window and walk through the main prayer hall, courtyard and interior spaces. The visit is part of the morning portion of the tour, and the time you spend there depends on the guide's pacing and how long you linger in each area.
Is the Muttrah Souq a guided walk through the alleys, or do you explore it on your own?
The Muttrah Souq is included in the afternoon portion of the tour (9:30 am to 1 pm visiting window). Your guide leads you through the market, but the souq is large and complex. The main artery takes less than five minutes to cross, while the side alleys extend considerably to the west and branch in many directions. You'll have time to explore and bargain, with the guide available to help navigate.
Can you buy things at the Muttrah Souq, or is it just a look-around?
The Muttrah Souq is a working market where you can buy. Gold, silver, khanjars, incense, bukhoor, frankincense and myrrh are all for sale. Bargaining is expected, and while discounts tend to be small, bringing cash in euros or dollars can get better offers than card payments.
What's the dress code for visiting the Grand Mosque and the palace?
Formal or smart casual dress is required. For places of worship like the Grand Mosque, knees and shoulders must be covered for both men and women: no shorts or sleeveless tops. Failure to comply with these requirements may result in refused entry.
Does the tour include lunch or any meals?
The tour includes bottled water. Food and drinks beyond that are not included, so you'll need to arrange your own meals or purchases at the souq if you want to eat during the afternoon portion.
