Hike to a temple above the valley, then eat in a city that hasn't changed much in centuries

You hike to a 2,285-meter temple with valley and mountain views, explore the medieval streets of Kirtipur, and have the option to eat local Newari food there. Hotel pickup and a private guide are included; the food is optional and paid separately. The hike is steady but manageable, and the whole experience stays within Kathmandu's outskirts.

6h

Step-by-step itinerary

  • Start from Thamel tourist hub
  • Pass by Pharping town
  • Hike uphill to Champadevi temple
  • Enjoy panoramic views from Champadevi
  • Hike downhill from Champadevi
  • Visit medieval town of Kirtipur
  • Explore historic temples in Kirtipur
  • Experience authentic Newari local food

The Experience

"The clouds come down fast up there," our guide said before we started, and he wasn't wrong. The pickup from Thamel happens early enough that you're on the trail to Champadevi while the valley is still quiet. The hike itself is steady uphill through forested slopes—not brutal, but you feel it. The temple sits at 2,285 meters, and on a clear day the whole Kathmandu Valley spreads out below you, with the Himalayan ranges sitting on the horizon like they're not quite real. Hindus and Buddhists both come here, especially during full moons, so there's always someone leaving flowers or saying a prayer at the top.

After you come back down—which takes less time than going up—the driver takes you to Kirtipur, a medieval Newari city that feels like you've stepped into a different century. The streets are narrow, the buildings are old wood and brick, and people are living their actual lives there, not performing for tourists. You walk through the old town with your guide, who points out the temples and explains how the city was built on a hillside as a kind of natural fortress. It's the kind of place where you notice the light hitting the stone differently, and you hear sounds you don't hear in Kathmandu proper.

The local food experience happens in Kirtipur—Newari cuisine, which is heavier and more complex than what you'd get in a restaurant in Thamel. The tour price doesn't include the meal itself, so you order and pay separately, which means you're not locked into a set menu. Some people skip it and just walk around; others sit down and try the momos and the spiced meat dishes. Either way, you're eating where locals eat, not at a tourist spot. The whole day runs from morning until late afternoon, with the drive back to your hotel included.

What’s included

  • Your day includes hotel pickup and drop-off by private air-conditioned vehicle, a professional English-speaking guide, bottled water throughout, and all fees and taxes.

  • A local food experience is available in Kirtipur, but meals and drinks are optional and paid separately according to your preference.
