The Experience

I’ll admit, I felt a little nervous lacing up my boots in Kathmandu — the idea of walking all the way to Everest Base Camp, then over the Cho La Pass to Gokyo sounded almost too much. But curiosity (and maybe a bit of stubbornness) won out. The first days felt like a slow climb through villages where kids waved and shopkeepers smiled at us, sometimes offering sweet tea that tasted faintly smoky. Our guide, Pasang, grew up near Namche Bazaar and seemed to know every twist in the trail — he’d point out prayer flags fluttering above stone walls or laugh when we mispronounced “Tengboche.” I still can’t say it right.

The air changed as we got higher — thinner, colder, but also somehow sharper. At night in Dingboche, I remember lying awake listening to yaks clanging past in the darkness. The trek to Everest Base Camp itself was tough; my legs burned on those last rocky stretches near Gorak Shep. But standing there with the Khumbu Icefall looming ahead… it’s hard to explain. You feel tiny and huge at the same time. We met another group from Pokhara who shared dried fruit with us and joked about whose sunburn was worse.

Crossing Cho La Pass was honestly brutal — wind biting at our faces and that weird crunch of snow underfoot that never quite sounds like normal snow. Pasang handed me a handful of salty peanuts at the top; I think they saved me. Dropping into Gokyo Valley after that felt like stepping into another world: turquoise lakes so bright they almost hurt your eyes, stone lodges with woodsmoke curling up in the cold morning air. Climbing Gokyo Ri before dawn was pure stubbornness — but watching sunlight spill over four of the world’s highest peaks (Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu) made every ache worth it. I still think about that view when things get noisy back home.
