The Experience
“Don’t worry, the tea tastes better up here,” our driver grinned as we shuffled out of the van in Nagarkot, still half-asleep. He wasn’t kidding — that first sip was warm and earthy, with a little steam curling around my hands. The sky was just starting to turn pink behind the Himalayas. I kept squinting at the outline of Everest, not really believing it was right there. Our guide pointed out Annapurna too, but honestly I was still waking up and a bit distracted by the cold on my nose. There’s something about watching Kathmandu valley wake up from above — you hear roosters echoing from somewhere down in the mist, and it’s so quiet otherwise.
After breakfast (simple eggs and flatbread — nothing fancy but just what I wanted), we started down the trail. The hike from Nagarkot is mostly downhill, which sounded easy until my knees reminded me otherwise after an hour or so. We passed through a Tamang village where kids waved at us and goats blocked the path like they owned it. Our guide chatted with a woman carrying firewood; I tried saying “namaste” and she smiled so wide I felt like maybe I’d gotten it right. There was this moment in Buddha Peace Park where everything smelled like pine needles and distant wood smoke — you know when you suddenly realize how far you are from your own routines? That hit me then.
The forest opened up near Jalpadevi Temple, sunlight flickering through leaves onto the trail. Someone spotted monkeys overhead (I only caught their tails swinging). By the time we reached Changu Narayan temple — which our guide said is Nepal’s oldest — my legs were tired but my mind felt kind of buzzy, like after a long swim. The temple itself is covered in carvings; tiny shops nearby sell painted masks and little brass bells that clink when you walk past. A shopkeeper offered us sweet milky tea while telling stories about kings and earthquakes (I understood maybe half but loved listening anyway).
On the drive back toward Kathmandu, we could have stopped at Bhaktapur Durbar Square (it’s optional), but honestly all I wanted was to watch rice fields slide by outside the window for a while. I still think about that sunrise view sometimes when I can’t sleep — that sense of being small but totally awake.
