The experience
The trek starts with a drive from Pokhara to Syauli Bazar, then a four-hour walk to Ghandruk, a large Gurung village where you'll spend your first night. From there the route climbs through forested trails and across ridges: Kimrong Danda, then Chomrong, the last permanent settlement before the higher reaches. Each day builds elevation gradually: the second day runs seven to eight hours to Sinuwa, the third another seven to eight hours through bamboo forest and past the Hinko cave to Deurali at 3,700 meters. The landscape shifts as you climb, from rhododendron groves and farm terraces into alpine scrub and views of Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre (Fish Tail), and Hiunchuli.
The fourth day is the push to base camp itself: five hours from Deurali, passing Machhapuchare Base Camp before reaching Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 meters, where you're surrounded by towering peaks and glaciers. You spend one night there, then begin the descent over two days: six hours down to Bamboo, then six more to Jhinu village, where a natural hot spring sits a half-hour's walk downhill if you want it. The final day is a three-hour walk back to lower elevations and a drive to Pokhara.
Your guide speaks English and holds a government license. Accommodation is in tea house lodges on a twin-sharing basis, with breakfast, lunch and dinner provided each day. Transport covers the drive from Pokhara to the trailhead and back, seasonal fruits during the trek, and the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and TIMS card required to trek here. The trek suits anyone with moderate fitness. At minimum you should be 15 years old and comfortable walking six to eight hours a day over uneven terrain with elevation gain.
