Track endemic species and raptors across four distinct bird habitats in a single trip

Nepal Birding is a guided tour from Kathmandu through the country's Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas, spanning alpine Himalayan slopes, mid-hill forests, wetlands and tropical jungle parks. The tour includes private transportation, a live English-speaking bird guide and all entry fees. It ranges from a half-day outing to a full day depending on which sites you choose. You'll sight over 650 recorded species, including Nepal's only endemic bird, the Spiny Babbler, along with vultures, eagles, pheasants and warblers across Gadhi-Siraichuli, Chitwan and Bardiya National Park.

The experience

The tour moves through four distinct bird zones, each one a day's drive or less from Kathmandu or Pokhara. Alpine habitat sits just a few hours away and holds Himalayan Monals and other high-altitude species. From the ridges above the valleys you'll also watch hovering vultures and birds of prey. Mid-hill forests and rivers host warblers, flycatchers and babblers. The tropical plains of Chitwan and Bardiya National Park concentrate waders in wetlands and lakes, plus the dense jungle birds (leafbirds, cuckoos, bulbuls and kalij pheasants) that thrive in the lowland canopy.

A private guide who speaks English leads the birding, moving at the pace that lets you spot and identify rather than rush past. The guide knows which species are active at which times and where to position you for sightings. The route itself becomes a hike with views of the Himalayan range from higher elevations. You'll also move through local farmland and villages, so the day mixes birding with the rhythm of the landscape itself.

Transportation is included and private, so you don't wait for other groups or follow a fixed schedule around other travelers. All entry fees to the protected areas are covered. The tour runs anywhere from six to eleven hours depending on which habitats you want to visit and how long you spend at each stop. Your guide can adjust the route on the day itself based on what's active and what you want to see.

Is this one for you?Book this tour if you want to see a wide range of species across different elevations and ecosystems in one trip. The private guide and transportation mean you move at the pace birding demands (stopping to identify, waiting for movement in the canopy) rather than following a group schedule. The six to eleven hour range lets you choose a half-day closer to Kathmandu or a full day reaching the national parks, depending on how much time you have and which habitats draw you most.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (12 to 17 years). Children under 12 can't be included in the booking.

What birds can I actually expect to see on a Nepal birding tour?

Nepal's recorded species total over 650, including white-backed vultures, Himalayan griffons, black eagles, steppe eagles, kalij pheasants, leafbirds, flycatchers, bushchats and babblers. The Spiny Babbler is Nepal's only endemic species. Migratory birds number 117 of the total, so the season affects what arrives. Your guide will know what's active during your visit.

How far is the alpine birding habitat from Kathmandu?

Gadhi-Siraichuli, the alpine Important Bird Area, sits just a day away from Kathmandu. The drive and hike combine to make it reachable as a single outing without an overnight stay.

Does the tour include meals or drinks?

The tour includes private transportation, the bird guide and all park entry fees. Meals, coffee, tea and bottled water are not included, so you'll want to bring snacks or arrange food stops with your guide.

What's the difference between the Kathmandu and Pokhara starting points?

Both cities sit within a day of the alpine habitat and the mid-hill forests. Kathmandu offers access to the valleys and ridges around the city itself. Pokhara sits closer to different forest zones and wetland areas. Your guide can tailor the route based on which city you start from and which habitats interest you most.

Is this tour physically demanding?

The tour involves hiking at altitude and walking through forests and wetlands, so a reasonable level of fitness helps. It's suitable for all fitness levels, though the alpine sites require walking uphill and the full-day options mean several hours on your feet. The pace is set by birding (stopping frequently to spot and identify) rather than by speed.
