The Experience

The trek begins when an airport representative meets you at Tribhuwan International Airport in Kathmandu and drives you to your hotel. After a rest day to acclimatize and meet your guide, you travel by tourist bus six hours to Pokhara, stopping for lunch on the way. From there, a one-hour drive takes you to Nayapul, where the actual trekking starts.

The route climbs gradually through forests and villages over the first few days, gaining height as you pass through Ulleri, Ghorepani and Tadapani. At Ghorepani, you wake before dawn for a two-hour hike to Poon Hill at 3,210 meters—the best viewpoint on the entire trail—then return for breakfast. From there the trail descends and climbs again through Chhomrong, a Gurung village, then drops steeply into a gorge where bamboo and rhododendron forests give way to glacial rivers and waterfalls. The final push to Annapurna Base Camp at 4,131 meters takes you through Machhapuchhre Base Camp, where you're surrounded by eight peaks: Annapurna, Machhapuchhre, Gangapurna, Himchuli, Annapurna South, Fang, Annapurna 3 and Tent Peak.

The descent retraces your steps downhill for six to seven hours back to Sinuwa, then continues to Jhinu Hill, where a natural hot spring sits beside the Modi River—a 20-minute walk from your lodge. From Jhinu Hill, the final trek down to Nayapul takes five to six hours, then a one-hour drive returns you to Pokhara. The last two days are the return journey: a six-to-seven-hour bus ride back to Kathmandu with a lunch stop, and on your final morning, a private vehicle transfer to the airport, passing Pashupatinath Temple for photos if you wish.

How many days do I actually spend trekking versus traveling by bus?
