The experience

You start in Pokhara and drive to Siwai, where the trek begins through lush forests and terraced fields. The first day takes you past the Gurung village of Chhomrong and down to Sinuwa, where you sleep in a tea house. The landscape shifts as you climb: bamboo and rhododendron forests, waterfalls, the Modi Khola River running alongside. On day three, you push higher through a rhododendron forest, possibly passing yak herds, and reach Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 meters. The views from there are the reason people come: the Annapurna Massif fills the horizon, with Annapurna I, Annapurna South, and the sacred Machapuchare (Fishtail) peak all visible from camp.

Day four reverses the climb. You wake early to watch sunrise over the massif, then descend through Machapuchare Base Camp and Deurali, passing through the same rhododendron forest but now heading downhill. On the final day, you trek to Bamboo and then to Siwai, where your guide arranges a jeep to drive you back to Pokhara. Before the descent ends, you stop at Jhinu Danda to soak in the natural hot springs: a way to ease tired legs after four days of trekking.

Your guide stays with you throughout, handling navigation, pacing and meals. The trek crosses the Annapurna Conservation Area, so you'll see rhododendrons, bamboo, alpine meadows and terraced farming. Tea houses provide simple rooms and meals along the route. The permit and TIMS card (Trekking Information Management System) are included, as is your guide's salary, accommodation, meals and insurance. You'll need moderate fitness (the altitude and daily climbing demand it), but the pace is set by your guide and your own rhythm.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

How high does the trek go, and will altitude be a problem?

Annapurna Base Camp sits at 4,130 meters (13,550 feet). The trek climbs gradually over three days, which gives your body time to adjust. If you have poor cardiovascular health, this trek is not recommended. Moderate fitness is the baseline. Your guide watches for signs of altitude sickness and can adjust the pace.

What do the tea houses provide, and will I be comfortable sleeping there?

Tea houses are simple lodges run by local families along the trek route. Each provides a basic room and meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner are included in your package. Rooms are modest but warm. Most have blankets and a bed. You'll share facilities with other trekkers. The tea houses are part of the trek experience and let you stay close to the villages and culture you're passing through.

What's the difference between Machapuchare Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp?

Machapuchare Base Camp (also called MBC) sits lower on the route and offers views of Machapuchare, the sacred "Fishtail" mountain. You pass through it on day three on your way up to Annapurna Base Camp, which is the higher destination at 4,130 meters. ABC is surrounded by the full Annapurna Massif and is where you spend the night before descending.

What's included in the price, and what do I need to pay for separately?

The trek includes your private guide, all trekking permits and the TIMS card, accommodation in tea houses, all meals during the trek, your guide's meals and accommodation, transport from Pokhara to Siwai and back from Siwai to Pokhara, and seasonal fresh fruits. You pay separately for any extra meals or desserts, all drinks, travel insurance, and tips for your guide and any porters.

How much walking happens each day, and what's the terrain like?

Days vary in length and difficulty. Day one and two involve steady climbing through forests and villages with ascents and descents. Day three is the hardest. You climb to 4,130 meters through rhododendron forest. Days four and five are descents, which are easier on the lungs but harder on the knees. Your guide sets the pace and stops as needed. Terrain ranges from forest paths and terraced fields to alpine meadows and rocky sections near base camp.
