The experience
The trek starts in Kathmandu with a morning flight to Lukla, a 30-minute flight over the Himalayas that lands at Tenzing-Hillary Airport. From there you walk downhill to Phakding for the first night: a short day designed to begin acclimatization. The route follows suspension bridges over the Dudh Koshi River and climbs through Sagarmatha National Park, passing views of Mount Thamserku and other peaks along the way.
Namche Bazaar sits at 3,440 meters and serves as the main acclimatization point. You spend a full day exploring the Sherpa town, which has ATMs, internet cafes, restaurants and a monastery, giving your body time to adjust before climbing higher. From there the trek continues through Tyangboche and Dingboche, each stop higher than the last. At Dingboche you take another acclimatization day with a short hike into Chhukung Valley, returning by evening. The path then follows the lateral moraine of Khumbu Glacier, passing stone memorials for climbers who have died on nearby peaks.
The final push goes from Gorak Shep to Everest Base Camp itself at 5,365 meters, then back down the same day. The next morning you climb Kalapathar at 5,545 meters for sunrise views of Mount Everest's summit piercing the clouds. The descent takes you through Pheriche and Pangboche (home to a monastery said to hold the scalp and bones of the Yeti) before returning to Namche and then down to Lukla. A 35-minute flight brings you back to Kathmandu, where you spend the final night before your international departure.
