The experience
You start with hotel pickup in the morning from Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, Jimbaran, Sanur or Denpasar, then head to Sanur harbor to board a public speedboat for the crossing to Nusa Penida Island. The boat ride takes time, but it gets you across the strait without renting a car or arranging separate transport. Once you land, a local guide meets you and drives the small group through the island's west coast, stopping at four distinct beaches and rock formations that each have their own character.
Kelingking Beach is the first stop: a dramatic cliff-top vantage where you photograph the T-shaped rock formation and the beach far below. Wild monkeys roam the area, so keep your belongings close. Next is Broken Beach (Pasih Uug), a natural arch of stone that frames a lagoon-like pool ringed by high cliffs. Snorkelers sometimes spot stingrays and sea turtles in the water. Angel's Billabong, a short drive away, is a natural pool nestled between two cliff faces that fills with seawater. At low tide you can wade into the clear water and swim. Crystal Bay, the final stop, has white sand and coconut trees, and you have time to swim and rest before the return journey.
Lunch is a set menu or fried rice, served during the day. The guide speaks English and stays with the group throughout. The return speedboat departs in the late afternoon, getting you back to Sanur by early evening and then to your hotel. The crossing can be rough if the sea is choppy, and the island heat is stronger than on the mainland, so bring water and sun protection. The tour operates with a minimum of two people booked.
