The experience
Three days is the span that lets you move through three different volcanic environments without rushing any of them. Day one takes you to Tumpak Sewu Waterfall in Lumajang: a 300-meter cascade surrounded by steep cliffs and jungle, often called the Niagara of Indonesia. You trek down into the valley and stand in front of the water itself, not viewing it from a distance. That night you stay in Bawangan Bromo hotel with breakfast included.
Day two is Mount Bromo. You start before dawn for the sunrise, traveling by 4WD jeep across the volcanic sea of sand to reach the crater rim as light breaks. The jeep gets you to the trailhead. From there you trek to the crater's edge. Overnight accommodation moves to a three-star hotel in the Bondowoso area. Day three ends at Ijen Crater, where you witness the blue fire (a rare sulfuric phenomenon that burns at night), and the turquoise crater lake. After exploring the crater, the tour concludes with your choice of drop-off: Ubud or Kuta in Bali, back to Surabaya, or Ketapang Port.
The van is air-conditioned for the drives between sites. Your guide speaks English and knows the mountains. Entrance fees to all three attractions, the ferry ticket, and two nights with breakfast are built into the price. A health certificate is required for Mount Ijen, and the itinerary involves sustained trekking and early starts, so moderate fitness is necessary.

Is this one for you?The 3-day span chains three volcanic landscapes without the rush of a 2-day trip, and the fixed itinerary means you don't plan each site separately. The guide and transport are already arranged. Early starts and sustained trekking require moderate fitness. The route is not suitable for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnancy, or cardiovascular concerns.

Top questions
What is Tumpak Sewu Waterfall like when you get there?
Tumpak Sewu is a 300-meter cascade in a steep valley surrounded by jungle cliffs. You trek down into the landscape to stand at the base of the water, not view it from a lookout. The name means "thousand waterfalls" in Indonesian, referring to the way the water breaks into streams as it falls.
Do I watch Mount Bromo's sunrise from the jeep or do I hike to see it?
The 4WD jeep takes you across the sea of sand to a trailhead near the crater rim. From there you trek on foot to reach the viewing point for sunrise. The jeep handles the rough volcanic terrain. The final approach to the crater is on foot.
What exactly is the blue fire at Ijen Crater?
Ijen's blue fire is a rare phenomenon caused by sulfuric gases igniting as they escape from the crater. It burns with a bright blue flame visible at night. You also see the crater's turquoise lake, formed by acidic volcanic water. A health certificate is required to visit Ijen because of the sulfur exposure.
Where does the tour end, and can I choose my drop-off point?
Yes. At checkout you choose one of three drop-off options: Ubud or Kuta in Bali, back to your starting point in Surabaya, or Ketapang Port. The tour concludes after you explore Mount Ijen on day three.
What's included in the price, and what do I need to arrange myself?
Included are the air-conditioned van, the 4WD jeep at Mount Bromo, two nights in hotels with breakfast, entrance fees to all three sites, a ferry ticket, and an English-speaking guide. Personal expenses are not covered. The operator recommends tipping the driver and guide.
