The experience
The route moves east from Yogyakarta across Java's cultural and geological spine. Day one takes you through Borobudur Temple (the world's largest Buddhist temple and a UNESCO site), where you climb to the top, then to Prambanan Temple Complex, the Hindu counterpart with its intricately carved stone towers. The next morning you transfer to Malang, stopping at Jodipan Village, known for its painted houses and street murals, before heading to Tumpaksewu Waterfall, where a local guide leads you down to the base of the multi-tiered cascade and the cool mist at its foot. You sleep near Bromo that night.
Day four starts before dawn. A jeep takes you to Kingkong Hill or Penanjakan viewpoint to watch the sunrise cast gold across Mount Bromo's smoking crater and the volcanic sand plain below, then you descend to the crater rim itself. That afternoon you transfer to Bondowoso. On the final day, you hike Mount Ijen in darkness to see the blue flames (sulfuric gases burning at the crater's edge), and watch the sunrise over the world's largest acidic crater lake, its water striking turquoise. A ferry then carries you across the Bali Strait to your arrival point on the island. All entrance fees, the jeep rental in Bromo, park permits, and your driver's expertise are included. Meals and personal spending are separate.
The tour operates as a private booking, so the pace and stops follow your group's rhythm. Your English-speaking driver doubles as tour manager, handling logistics and navigation. Accommodation varies by availability: hotels in Malang, Bromo, and Bondowoso are confirmed at booking. The first night in Yogyakarta is optional, as is the transfer from the ferry dock to your Bali hotel. Both are add-ons you select at checkout. Minimum age is twelve.

Top questions
What exactly is Ijen Crater and why do people hike there in the dark?
Ijen Crater in East Java holds the world's largest acidic crater lake, famous for its striking turquoise water. Hikers climb at night to witness blue flames (sulfuric gases igniting at the crater's rim), and to see sulfur miners at work before sunrise illuminates the landscape. The flames are visible only in darkness, which is why the hike starts before dawn.
Do I need to be very fit to do this tour, or can I skip the volcano hikes?
The tour requires a high level of physical fitness because the Bromo sunrise hike and the Ijen Crater hike involve steep terrain and early starts. Both are core parts of the itinerary and cannot be skipped. If you have spinal injuries, are pregnant, or have cardiovascular concerns, this tour is not recommended.
What's included in the price, and what do I pay for separately?
The tour includes private transport, your English-speaking driver, all park and temple entrance fees, three nights of accommodation, the ferry to Bali, jeep rental in Bromo, and a local guide at Tumpaksewu Waterfall and Ijen Crater. Meals (lunch and dinner) and personal expenses are not included. The first night in Yogyakarta and the final transfer to your Bali hotel are optional add-ons.
How does the ferry to Bali work, and where does it leave from?
On day five, after the Ijen Crater hike and sunrise, you transfer to Ketapang Port and cross the Bali Strait by ferry to Bali. The ferry is included in your tour price. You can add a transfer from the ferry dock to your Bali hotel at checkout if you need one.
Can I arrange my own hotel in Yogyakarta on the first night, or does the tour include it?
The first night's accommodation in Yogyakarta is optional. If you want it included, you select the "ALL IN" option at checkout. If you're arriving early and prefer to book your own hotel, you can choose the "Transport Only" option instead. Either way, the tour starts with Borobudur and Prambanan on day one.
