The tour starts at Yogyakarta airport or train station, where staff meet you and drive 1.5 hours to the Borobudur temple area. You stay overnight near the temple, then wake at 4:30 am for the sunrise tour. A special early entry before public visitors arrive. The walk through the dewy garden and the light hitting the stone Buddha faces as the sun clears the volcanoes is the reason most travelers book this leg. By 9 am you're back at your hotel, then driven to Prambanan Temple for the city tour, visiting the Sultan Palace, Water Castle, and local artisan workshops. Lunch is at a restaurant in Yogyakarta. You stay overnight in the city.
On day three, staff pick you up around 6 am and take you to Tugu Train Station. The executive-class train leaves at 6:45 am and runs 4 hours to Surabaya, where you can see rice fields, villages and small towns from the window. Staff meet you at Surabaya Gubeng station and drive 3–4 hours to Mount Bromo, stopping for lunch on the way. You arrive in the late afternoon, have dinner and stay overnight at a lodge in the Bromo area.
The Mount Bromo sunrise starts at 3:30 am (earlier on weekends). A jeep takes you to Penanjakan hill, where you watch the sun rise over the volcanoes and the sea of sands below. You then ride a horse or walk across the sand to the stairs leading up Mount Bromo's slope, climb to the peak to see the volcanic crater, and return to the jeep for breakfast back at the hotel. After showering and packing, you drive 5–6 hours to the Ijen Crater area in Banyuwangi, passing rural landscape, rice fields and plantations. Lunch is on the way. You arrive in the late afternoon and stay overnight near Ijen.
On day five, the Ijen Crater trek starts at 5 am. The drive to the parking area takes about an hour, passing through plantations and rainforest. The hike to the crater rim takes 1–1.5 hours. At 2,385 meters you see the turquoise acid lake and the crater walls. If weather permits and you're willing to start at midnight or 1 am, the optional blue fire tour shows the sulfur flames (a gas mask is provided). After breakfast, you're transferred to Gilimanuk ferry harbor for the 1-hour ferry to Bali. Depending on your Bali hotel location, the drive from the ferry takes 30 minutes to 5 hours. Staff escort you to your hotel and the tour ends.
