The Experience

“You want real coffee or kopi tubruk?” Pak Agus grinned at me in the dark outside our guesthouse near Borobudur. It was barely 4am and the air felt thick with dew, grass sticking to my sandals as we shuffled toward Setumbu Hill. The sky was still black but you could hear birds starting up—somewhere a rooster losing its mind. We sipped that gritty Javanese coffee (I probably made a face) while waiting for the first streaks of sun over the volcanoes. I didn’t expect the hush—just us and a handful of others, everyone whispering like we’d agreed not to break the spell. When the light finally hit Borobudur’s stone stupas down below, it was quieter than I thought sunrise could be.

After breakfast back at the hotel (sticky rice wrapped in banana leaf—tasted better than it looked), our guide Dewi led us through Yogyakarta’s streets for a city tour. Prambanan Temple loomed out of nowhere, all sharp lines against the sky; Dewi told us how each relief tells a story, but honestly I kept getting distracted by kids selling batik postcards outside the gates. Lunch was spicy tempeh at a warung where locals ate fast and laughed louder than us tourists ever do. There was time for Malioboro Street too—crowded, noisy, neon everywhere—and then suddenly we were on a train heading east, watching rice paddies blur past for hours. The executive class seat was softer than my bed at home.

Bromo came next—a 3am start again (what is it with volcanoes and no sleep?), this time bouncing in an old jeep up Penanjakan hill. Our driver sang along to dangdut on his phone radio while fog curled around the road. At sunrise, everyone went quiet again: mountains layered like paper cutouts, sulfur in the air, horses stamping in the sand sea below. I tried climbing Bromo’s stairs too fast and nearly lost my breath—Dewi just laughed and handed me her scarf because “the wind here is sneaky.” Later that day we drove for hours through villages and plantations toward Banyuwangi; I dozed off somewhere between sugarcane fields and woke up sticky from sweat but kind of happy anyway.

Ijen Crater was last—a 5am hike through rainforest so dense it felt like walking inside someone else’s dream. Our guide Wayan pointed out giant ferns (“prehistoric!” he said) while miners passed carrying baskets of sulfur that looked way too heavy for one person. The lake at the top really is turquoise—almost fake-looking—and you can smell sulfur before you see it. My shoes are still stained from that walk down. After breakfast back at the hotel (eggs this time), we caught the ferry to Bali where another driver met us with a big smile and cold water bottles. The whole thing felt like moving through layers—temples to cities to mountains to sea—and now when I think about Java, it’s those early mornings that come back first.
