The Experience

I didn’t expect to feel so awake at 4am, but there I was—squinting into the dark outside our hotel in Yogyakarta, clutching a cup of sweet kopi as our driver, Pak Agus, grinned and waved us into his car. The city was still asleep; only the hum of scooters somewhere far off. I’d read about the Borobudur sunrise tour but didn’t realize how much the early air would smell like wet earth and clove cigarettes. Agus had this playlist of Javanese pop that made me smile, even if I couldn’t catch half the lyrics.

We reached Borobudur just as the sky started to go pink behind the volcanoes. There were other travelers—some quietly shivering in their jackets—but mostly it felt peaceful. The stone was cool under my hand climbing up (I slipped once—Agus laughed and said “everyone does”). Watching sunlight spill over those ancient carvings was…well, I still think about that view. It’s not something photos really get right. Afterward, we stopped for breakfast noodles at a roadside stall; I tried to order in Bahasa Indonesia and probably butchered it, but the woman just smiled and handed me extra sambal anyway.

Prambanan was next—a bit of a drive but honestly I nodded off for part of it. The temples are taller than you expect, all sharp lines against bright blue sky. Our guide Wulan pointed out little details in the stone—monkeys in mid-leap, dancers frozen for centuries—and told stories about lost kings I’d never heard before. She also showed us where to stand for photos (I’m terrible at posing). There were schoolkids everywhere on field trips, giggling and asking for selfies with us—felt weirdly famous for a minute.

The day is long (10 hours or so), but you can pick what you want to see along the way—some people add Merapi jeep rides or cycling tours, but we just wanted temples and slow wandering. It’s not all smooth: traffic gets thick near town, tickets aren’t included so keep cash handy, and Mondays are tricky because both Borobudur and Prambanan have restricted areas (wish we’d known that earlier). Still…there’s something special about being led around by someone who grew up here—Agus knew shortcuts and little snack stalls I’d never find alone.
