The experience

Your day starts with pickup from your Yogyakarta accommodation and a drive to Prambanan Temple, the largest temple compound dedicated to Shiva in Indonesia. Built in the tenth century, the complex holds three main temples decorated with reliefs that tell the Ramayana story: the epic of Rama's journey to rescue Shinta from the giant Rahwana, with scenes of Hanoman and the monkey forces building a bridge to the kingdom of Alengka. The three central temples honor Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma, with three smaller temples dedicated to the animals who serve them. If you request it, you can time your visit for sunset.

After Prambanan, you travel three hours to the slopes of Mount Lawu, passing tea plantations and rice fields backed by hills and mountains. Sukuh Temple sits on this slope, built after Hindu practice had weakened in Java, and its pyramid-like form breaks from traditional Hindu architecture: some scholars suggest it represents a mountain. The reliefs here tell parts of the Mahabharata story, and the temple holds unusual statues including a life-sized male figure and three flattened tortoise shells, which in Hindu mythology symbolize the base of the world and are an avatar of Vishnu. Cetho Temple, built in the fifteenth century on the same slopes, marks the last significant temple construction in Java before the island's courts converted to Islam in the sixteenth century. The temple's distinctive style and the scarcity of records about Javanese ceremonies of that era make its original purpose difficult to interpret.

An English-speaking guide travels with you throughout, explaining the stories carved into each temple and the shift in religious practice across the centuries. The vehicle is air-conditioned, bottled water is provided, and all entrance fees are covered. The tour ends with drop-off at your accommodation.
