Three temples and a volcano before noon, then the afternoon light on stone.

Step-by-step itinerary

Merapi sunrise, Borobudur and Prambanan tour

  • Jeep ride to Mount Merapi summit
  • Watch sunrise from Mount Merapi
  • Enjoy breakfast at Mount Merapi
  • Explore Borobudur Temple and climb summit
  • Visit Prambanan Temple complex

The experience

The day starts before dawn. You board a 4WD jeep and climb Mount Merapi's volcanic terrain in darkness, arriving at the summit as the sky changes color. Breakfast waits there while your guide explains the geology and cultural weight of the volcano. This is not a hike (the jeep does the work), but the cold and the early hour and the view of the valleys below as light spreads across them are real.

From Merapi you move to Borobudur Temple, the largest Buddhist temple in the world. You climb through it to the summit, passing stone carvings and towering stupas. The guide walks you through the temple's history and what the architecture means. The panoramic views from the top look out over lush landscape in all directions. On Mondays, the temple stays at ground level only: no climb to the peak.

The final stop is Prambanan Temple, a Hindu complex dedicated to Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. The temples here are intricately adorned, and the guide shares the stories woven into the site: tales of love, power and divine intervention. By afternoon, the light on the stone is different from what you saw at dawn. The air-conditioned vehicle carries you between all three sites. Bottled water is provided throughout.
