The experience
The day starts in darkness. You're driven to a hillside near Borobudur to watch the sunrise paint the temple's stone stupas from a distance, a vantage point that frames the whole landscape at once. After the light builds, you head down to Pawon Temple, a small Buddhist shrine, then to Mendut Temple, where 3-meter-tall Buddha statues sit inside a single chamber. Both temples sit within walking distance of Borobudur itself, and the route connects them as a cluster rather than scattered stops.
From the temples, the tour shifts to Mount Merapi. A jeep takes you across the volcano's lava fields (the black, rocky terrain left by past eruptions), where you can step out and walk the slopes. This is the part of the day that separates this tour from others in Yogyakarta: most sunrise tours end at the temples, but this one continues into the volcano's geology. The jeep ride is not included in the base price, so you arrange and pay for it separately at the time of booking.
The route also passes through a local market if you're interested. Your driver can stop and walk with you to help with any interactions. Transport runs in an air-conditioned car or minivan depending on group size, and you'll need to bring your passport to register at Borobudur's ticket box: a new requirement for entry outside public hours. The whole day runs between nine and eleven hours from pickup to drop-off.

Is this one for you?Choose the All In option if you want temple entry included and one straightforward booking. Pick Transport Only if you'd rather arrange Borobudur entry separately or skip it entirely. The jeep ride across Merapi is always a separate add-on, so factor that cost in when you decide.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (12 to 16 years). Under 12: they can't be included in the booking.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. No refund if you cancel.
What time does the sunrise tour leave Yogyakarta?
Pickup happens early enough to reach the hilltop before dawn so you can watch Borobudur light up as the sun rises. The exact time depends on the season and sunrise timing, so confirm it when you book.
Do I enter Borobudur temple itself, or just see it from the hill?
Borobudur entry is included in the All In option. You see the sunrise from the hilltop first, then later in the morning you enter the temple grounds itself. The Transport Only option does not include temple entry.
What are Mendut and Pawon temples like?
Mendut Temple holds three large Buddha statues inside a compact stone chamber and sits close to Borobudur. Pawon Temple is smaller and sits between the other two. Both are working Buddhist temples and part of the same ancient complex.
Is the Mount Merapi jeep ride included?
The jeep ride across Merapi's lava fields is not included in either option. You pay for it separately at checkout and ride in a separate vehicle with a jeep operator who knows the terrain.
What should I bring or know before booking?
Bring your passport. It's required to register at Borobudur's ticket box. The tour runs in all weather, but during the rainy season (November to March) it may be canceled if conditions are poor. If that happens, you can reschedule for another date. Bottled water is provided throughout the day.
